War!

War!

For decades, the United States has operated in a near-permanent state of war.

Americans have been told that endless military intervention is necessary to:

  • protect freedom,
  • spread democracy,
  • fight terrorism,
  • defend allies,
  • and preserve global stability.

Yet endless war has instead produced:

  • massive debt,
  • instability,
  • civilian suffering,
  • expanded surveillance,
  • corruption,
  • psychological trauma,
  • and growing distrust around the world.

Meanwhile, many of the same institutions and interests continue demanding:

  • higher military spending,
  • greater confrontation,
  • more sanctions,
  • and new geopolitical conflicts.

The Fifth Republic believes America must reject permanent war and pursue a foreign policy based on:

  • peace,
  • diplomacy,
  • restraint,
  • constitutional accountability,
  • and international cooperation.

Opposing War with Iran

The Fifth Republic opposes military confrontation with Iran.

For decades, political leaders, media systems, and foreign policy institutions have repeatedly promoted fear regarding Iran while normalizing the possibility of war.

Another major Middle Eastern war could produce:

  • catastrophic regional instability,
  • enormous civilian casualties,
  • economic disruption,
  • expanded authoritarianism,
  • and potentially global escalation.

The Fifth Republic believes diplomacy and negotiation must replace the cycle of:

  • threats,
  • sanctions,
  • proxy conflict,
  • and military escalation.

The American people should not be dragged into another catastrophic war through fear campaigns and geopolitical manipulation.

Opposing the Containment of China

The Fifth Republic rejects the idea that China must be treated as a permanent enemy.

The growing push toward:

  • militarization,
  • economic confrontation,
  • alliance expansion,
  • and geopolitical hostility
risks creating a new Cold War — or worse.

Competition between nations does not require:

  • hatred,
  • military encirclement,
  • propaganda,
  • or inevitable conflict.

The Fifth Republic supports peaceful engagement with China through:

  • diplomacy,
  • trade,
  • cultural exchange,
  • scientific cooperation,
  • and mutual respect.

A stable future requires cooperation between major powers rather than endless escalation.

Reducing America’s Global Military Footprint

The United States maintains an enormous global military presence, including hundreds of bases and facilities around the world.

This worldwide military infrastructure:

  • costs enormous sums of money,
  • fuels geopolitical tensions,
  • and often entangles America in conflicts unrelated to genuine national defense.

The Fifth Republic supports a major reduction in overseas military bases and permanent military deployments.

America should defend itself without attempting to function as:

  • global police force,
  • permanent occupier,
  • or military empire.

A healthier republic would prioritize:

  • domestic stability,
  • infrastructure,
  • healthcare,
  • education,
  • and the well-being of its own citizens.

Slashing the Military Budget

The United States spends extraordinary amounts on:

  • military systems,
  • foreign wars,
  • intelligence agencies,
  • weapons contractors,
  • and global military operations.

Meanwhile, many Americans struggle with:

  • housing costs,
  • healthcare,
  • debt,
  • deteriorating infrastructure,
  • and economic insecurity.

The Fifth Republic believes military spending should be dramatically reduced and redirected toward:

  • public infrastructure,
  • education,
  • healthcare,
  • environmental restoration,
  • scientific research,
  • and economic stability.

A nation obsessed with militarism eventually weakens itself economically and socially.

The Military-Industrial Complex

War has become deeply intertwined with:

  • corporate profit,
  • lobbying,
  • weapons manufacturing,
  • media narratives,
  • and political influence.

The Fifth Republic believes the military-industrial complex exerts enormous influence over:

  • foreign policy,
  • public perception,
  • and national priorities.

Institutions that profit from war should not dominate decisions involving:

  • human lives,
  • international conflict,
  • and national policy.

A democratic society must remain skeptical of systems where:

  • war generates profit,
  • fear generates power,
  • and permanent conflict benefits entrenched interests.

Accountability for War Crimes

The Fifth Republic believes political leaders and governments should be held accountable for violations of international law and crimes committed during war. International courts and human-rights organizations have investigated or alleged war crimes involving numerous governments and leaders across multiple conflicts, including those connected to the Iraq War and the Gaza conflict. No leader should be considered above scrutiny simply because of:

  • nationality,
  • political power,
  • military strength,
  • or alliance status.

The Fifth Republic supports consistent standards regarding:

  • war crimes,
  • torture,
  • civilian targeting,
  • illegal invasions,
  • and violations of international law.

Citizens must remain free to debate and investigate the actions of leaders including figures such as George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Benjamin Netanyahu without accusations automatically shutting down discussion. International legal institutions including the ICC have issued or pursued warrants involving Netanyahu and other leaders in relation to alleged war crimes during the Gaza conflict. The rule of law loses meaning if it applies only to weaker nations or political enemies.

Ending the “War on Terror”

The so-called “War on Terror” dramatically expanded:

  • military intervention,
  • surveillance,
  • executive power,
  • censorship,
  • intelligence authority,
  • and secrecy.

After decades of war, many citizens question whether these policies produced:

  • peace,
  • security,
  • or genuine stability.

The Fifth Republic believes fear should never become a permanent justification for:

  • endless war,
  • erosion of civil liberties,
  • or expansion of authoritarian systems.

National security policies must remain:

  • transparent,
  • constitutionally limited,
  • and accountable to the public.

Peace Through Diplomacy

The Fifth Republic believes diplomacy should become America’s primary foreign policy tool rather than military coercion.

Military force may sometimes be necessary for genuine defense.

But modern foreign policy too often treats:

  • diplomacy as weakness,
  • militarism as strength,
  • and confrontation as inevitable.

A stable world requires:

  • dialogue,
  • cooperation,
  • trade,
  • mutual respect,
  • and peaceful coexistence between nations.

Civilization cannot survive indefinitely under permanent geopolitical hostility.

Seattle

Don’t look to liberal Seattle for any help on this issue. Seattle liberals are generally anti-war, at least superficially. However, many will also tell you they support the troops. Whether they support the troops or not, most have the passion of a slug.

The Goal

The Fifth Republic supports a future where:

  • America abandons endless war,
  • military power is restrained,
  • diplomacy replaces escalation,
  • and public resources are invested in human development rather than permanent conflict.

The goal is not weakness.

The goal is sanity.

A republic devoted to peace, liberty, accountability, and human dignity will ultimately be stronger than one consumed by militarism and fear.
